The refurbishment of this early 20th century train station, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and Railway Heritage, has been recognized as one of the 10 best sustainability and hotel refurbishment projects in Spain in 2022.
CHALLENGE
The historic railway station of Canfranc reopens its doors, transformed into the Hotel Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideway Hotel 5* Gran Lujo of the Barceló Group.
Inaugurada en 1928, la antigua estación de Inaugurated in 1928, the old Canfranc station was a crucial point for railway communication between Spain and France and one of the most important railway complexes built in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century.
Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2002 and Railway Heritage, the station has been the subject of a rehabilitation project that has respected its DNA and its valuable architectural and cultural heritage.
This project, carried out by the Barceló hotel chain, aspires to become a reference establishment, both nationally and internationally, and an important point of attraction for luxury tourism in the region.
The hotel has 104 rooms, including 4 luxury suites, a wellness area with a heated swimming pool and a library. The hotel has 104 rooms, including 4 luxury suites, a wellness area with a heated swimming pool and a library.
SOLUTION
Respect for the architectural and cultural heritage of these historic facilities has been fundamental to the execution of this project Other factors such as energy efficiency, safety and social and environmental sustainability have also been taken into account.
SCATI, a manufacturer of video surveillance systems specialized in providing solutions for the hotel sector, has been entrusted with the task of guaranteeing total protection of the installation.
The main need for this project is the protection of the hotel’s common areas, especially the historic station lobby, which has been converted into a reception area and is currently in common use.
However, there is another latent imperative need. The integration of video surveillance systems with the architecture and design of the spaces where the balance between the aesthetics of the hotel and the comfort and privacy of its customers is guaranteed without sacrificing security.
For the protection of the installations more than 30 cameras model SEM-3513R-EY2 are installed, a 2Mpx anti-vandalism minidome that incorporates infrared up to 30 meters. They also have WDR (Wide Dynamic Range), functionality that allows to compensate the problems of backlighting and glare that can occur in some areas such as accesses, corridors, etc. and 5 other minidome cameras (model SEM-3613VR3S-XYA2) of more discreet size.
To cover large areas where the point of interest is constantly changing, 2 cameras of the SCATI EYE Panoramic series are installed. The SEM-3701RS-EAO model offers a high quality image thanks to its 6 Mpx resolution and its wide-angle lens allows recording the entire field of view without blind spots.
The recording of these images is done through two SCATI VISION NVR’s of the PRO range, with a storage sized to the needs of the Hotel.
SCATI’s PRO range is capable of managing up to 32 megapixel cameras simultaneously with maximum performance and features a PoE switch with up to 16 ports for fast start-up and significant savings in installation costs.
The versatility and manageability of these recording platforms make them ideal for this project requiring robust, reliable and easy to operate equipment.
To guarantee the correct operation of the video surveillance system on a continuous basis, the solution provided by SCATI includes an Uninterruptible Power Supply ( UPS) that provides backup power to charge the equipment, avoiding problems arising from power interruption (instability or power outages).
The management of the video surveillance system will be carried out through SCATI’s video management platform (VMS) from 3 posts that will have different access permissions (2 for viewing camera images) and one for system supervision.
In a project where details matter, the security managers have relied on SCATI’s consulting and start-up services to achieve maximum operability and efficiency of the system .
BENEFITS
SCATI offers an open platform that allows you to easily integrate multiple security systems into a single solution: access control, anti-intrusion systems, fire, etc. A flexible system, capable of adapting with total discretion to variable events and situations that may occur in these facilities.
Camera selection is crucial, and a combination of more discreet cameras that maintain client privacy with others that act as a deterrent and are able to handle strong changes in scene brightness and continue to capture each scene in detail is chosen.
SCATI’s VMS platform offers advanced search and management tools to optimize forensic work, while providing rapid response and reducing associated time and costs.
In addition to guaranteeing the security of the installation, the system incorporates Artificial Intelligence to gather information from intelligent analytics on the images, so that the hotel establishment can make decisions that improve daily operations and optimize processes.
SCATI’s video surveillance systems coexist harmoniously with an exponent of Spain’s architectural and cultural heritage and together with Grupo Barceló write a new chapter of this new story.
“Security in this project is essential. As it is a Railway Historical Cultural and Heritage Asset, the choice of video surveillance systems has followed meticulous specifications. In addition to protecting the various areas of the hotel, the cameras have been integrated with the classic decoration inspired by the 1920s, guaranteeing a balance between the aesthetics of the hotel and the privacy of its guests,” says Rubén de Abuin, Key Account Manager at SCATI.

Luxury resort in Cancun implements SCATI’s systems
The hotel, located between the Caribbean Sea and the lagoon of Bahia Petempich, is one of the best resorts in Cancun and has two buildings and sections in the shape of a horseshoe, each with its own personality and ambiance.
In order to offer its guests the best conditions, the hotel has invested in a complete video surveillance system that incorporates thermography and license plate recognition systems. This resort has nothing to envy to any critical infrastructure and more than 300 video surveillance cameras ensure the safety of its guests.
Solution
This is a newly built hotel complex that has quickly become one of the major references in the sector in Mexico.
To meet all the requirements of this ambitious project, SCATI has worked hand in hand with one of its trusted integrators.
Since the opening of this hotel took place during the pandemic, thermographic solutions have been incorporated into the project, specifically to protect the main entrances as well as the common areas of the complex.
Our thermography systems are able to measure body temperature with high accuracy and send an alarm when a subject exceeds the desirable temperature previously set. Along with this alarm, operators receive a thermal and optical image that is simultaneously provided by our cameras, the temperature data and the marking of who has triggered the alarm in order to be able to respond quickly to the incident.
In addition, this resort included a license plate recognition (LPR) system to better serve its guests and simplify their stay at the hotel. Our license plate recognition systems make it possible to automate and control the entry and exit of vehicles to and from the facilities. In this way, vehicles passing through the complex can be kept under control. This is very beneficial for the hotel complex, both in terms of security and business improvement.
With these analytics, our video systems detect the vehicle, send an alarm and compare the image with the database housed in the video recorder, activating the corresponding action protocol automatically. In this way, if a VIP client accesses the hotel facilities, he can be given personalized treatment from the very first moment, thus improving his stay and, therefore, his satisfaction.
The security installation of the complex is completed with the installation of more than 300 cameras. Among them, 234 outdoor Minidomo IP cameras predominate, which are perfect for both low-light scenarios or environments where there is a high contrast of lighting, as they always offer the best image quality thanks to their integrated infrared capable of covering a distance of 10 meters.
Our Minidome series cameras offer basic video analytics such as motion detection, face detection, scene change, line crossing or intrusion among others. In addition, their discreet size makes them ideal for protecting places where customer privacy and intimacy are paramount.
Beneficts
This project has not only secured the hotel facilities by protecting them from vandalism or dangerous situations. Our solutions go beyond security, and incorporate the latest technologies in artificial intelligence to offer tools that improve our clients’ business.
Thanks to our systems, the hotel can obtain information from its guests, know their needs and preferences and therefore, improve their satisfaction during their stay in the complex.
On the other hand, our systems make it possible to obtain relevant and necessary information in every situation. Thanks to our thermographic control systems, we can detect and monitor health risks for our customers, and even prevent people from entering the facilities if they exceed the appropriate temperature.
Together with thermographic control, license plate recognition allows the hotel to control its accesses, thus improving its security and giving them the possibility of giving a differential treatment to certain customers from the first moment of their stay in the complex.
Thanks to SCATI’s solution, one of the most innovative and exclusive hotels in Mexico now has a state-of-the-art CCTV system, with advanced analytics and functionalities, which allows it to guarantee the security and satisfaction of its customers during their stay.

Based on advanced video technology, SCATI COUNTER allows you to know the exact number of people in an establishment and automatically track occupancy.
Adapting to the "new normality" after COVID-19 requires that many facilities (banks, retail, hotels, restaurants, etc.) need solutions to manage real-time capacity and enforce social distancing.
Our video surveillance solutions incorporate deep learning algorithms allowing to know the number of people in an establishment and to track the occupation automatically.
SCATI COUNTER is the solution for real-time capacity management based on intelligent video technology.
SCATI smart video cameras have a double lens with 3D vision that allows measuring the height of a person, and allow two-way counting (entrances and exits). Even differentiating between adults, children and pets.
These cameras are able to cover up to 8 meters and detect if several people entry-exit at the same time.
Real-time capacity management.
The SCATI VISION recorder manages the metadata from the people counting cameras, even in spaces where there are multiple accesses, guaranteeing full capacity control.
Through a monitor, located at the entrance of the establishment, both workers and employees can know the maximum capacity and the number of people there are at any time.
Up to three possible scenarios can be viewed on the monitor so that users know if they can access or should wait to enter the establishment.
In case of capacity is close to exceeding the maximum capacity allowed or if the occupation has reached the maximum capacity, a message will be shown in real time.
It is a completely configurable solution. The employees of the establishment can configure the opening time of each of its departments, indicate the previous threshold of a warning of exceeding capacity and even manually set the capacity. Also, all these parameters can be configured remotely from the SCATI WATCHER management software.
