The refurbishment of this early 20th century train station, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and Railway Heritage, has been recognized as one of the 10 best sustainability and hotel refurbishment projects in Spain in 2022.
CHALLENGE
The historic railway station of Canfranc reopens its doors, transformed into the Hotel Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideway Hotel 5* Gran Lujo of the Barceló Group.
Inaugurada en 1928, la antigua estación de Inaugurated in 1928, the old Canfranc station was a crucial point for railway communication between Spain and France and one of the most important railway complexes built in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century.
Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 2002 and Railway Heritage, the station has been the subject of a rehabilitation project that has respected its DNA and its valuable architectural and cultural heritage.
This project, carried out by the Barceló hotel chain, aspires to become a reference establishment, both nationally and internationally, and an important point of attraction for luxury tourism in the region.
The hotel has 104 rooms, including 4 luxury suites, a wellness area with a heated swimming pool and a library. The hotel has 104 rooms, including 4 luxury suites, a wellness area with a heated swimming pool and a library.
In a rehabilitation project of this caliber where infrastructure protection is crucial, security can only be left in the hands of an expert in hotel security systems such as SCATI.
SOLUTION
Respect for the architectural and cultural heritage of these historic facilities has been fundamental to the execution of this project Other factors such as energy efficiency, safety and social and environmental sustainability have also been taken into account.
SCATI, a manufacturer of video surveillance systems specialized in providing solutions for the hotel sector, has been entrusted with the task of guaranteeing total protection of the installation.
The main need for this project is the protection of the hotel’s common areas, especially the historic station lobby, which has been converted into a reception area and is currently in common use.
However, there is another latent imperative need. The integration of video surveillance systems with the architecture and design of the spaces where the balance between the aesthetics of the hotel and the comfort and privacy of its customers is guaranteed without sacrificing security.
For the protection of the installations more than 30 cameras model SEM-3513R-EY2 are installed, a 2Mpx anti-vandalism minidome that incorporates infrared up to 30 meters. They also have WDR (Wide Dynamic Range), functionality that allows to compensate the problems of backlighting and glare that can occur in some areas such as accesses, corridors, etc. and 5 other minidome cameras (model SEM-3613VR3S-XYA2) of more discreet size.
To cover large areas where the point of interest is constantly changing, 2 cameras of the SCATI EYE Panoramic series are installed. The SEM-3701RS-EAO model offers a high quality image thanks to its 6 Mpx resolution and its wide-angle lens allows recording the entire field of view without blind spots.
The recording of these images is done through two SCATI VISION NVR’s of the PRO range, with a storage sized to the needs of the Hotel.
SCATI’s PRO range is capable of managing up to 32 megapixel cameras simultaneously with maximum performance and features a PoE switch with up to 16 ports for fast start-up and significant savings in installation costs.
The versatility and manageability of these recording platforms make them ideal for this project requiring robust, reliable and easy to operate equipment.
To guarantee the correct operation of the video surveillance system on a continuous basis, the solution provided by SCATI includes an Uninterruptible Power Supply ( UPS) that provides backup power to charge the equipment, avoiding problems arising from power interruption (instability or power outages).
The management of the video surveillance system will be carried out through SCATI’s video management platform (VMS) from 3 posts that will have different access permissions (2 for viewing camera images) and one for system supervision.
In a project where details matter, the security managers have relied on SCATI’s consulting and start-up services to achieve maximum operability and efficiency of the system .
BENEFITS
SCATI offers an open platform that allows you to easily integrate multiple security systems into a single solution: access control, anti-intrusion systems, fire, etc. A flexible system, capable of adapting with total discretion to variable events and situations that may occur in these facilities.
Camera selection is crucial, and a combination of more discreet cameras that maintain client privacy with others that act as a deterrent and are able to handle strong changes in scene brightness and continue to capture each scene in detail is chosen.
SCATI’s VMS platform offers advanced search and management tools to optimize forensic work, while providing rapid response and reducing associated time and costs.
In addition to guaranteeing the security of the installation, the system incorporates Artificial Intelligence to gather information from intelligent analytics on the images, so that the hotel establishment can make decisions that improve daily operations and optimize processes.
SCATI’s video surveillance systems coexist harmoniously with an exponent of Spain’s architectural and cultural heritage and together with Grupo Barceló write a new chapter of this new story.
“Security in this project is essential. As it is a Railway Historical Cultural and Heritage Asset, the choice of video surveillance systems has followed meticulous specifications. In addition to protecting the various areas of the hotel, the cameras have been integrated with the classic decoration inspired by the 1920s, guaranteeing a balance between the aesthetics of the hotel and the privacy of its guests,” says Rubén de Abuin, Key Account Manager at SCATI.
